Computer Crime
Computer Crime
Computer crime, also known as E-Crime, Hi-Tech Crime or Electronic Crime, involves a computer as the target of the crime. The computer is the device that is used in the committal of crime. The crime can be blackmail, fraud, theft, forgery, or embezzlement. The medium between the computer and the criminal offender is generally the internet.
Criminal activity via the usage of a computer falls into three categories: unauthorized use of another persons computer by the stealing of a username and/or password, using a virus as a backdoor method to accessing a persons computer, and creating a virus to harass a person while on the internet. All three of these categories are considered computer crimes, and in some cases they are considered white color crimes. Computer crime may also involve hacking, harassment, offensive content, pornography, extortion, piracy, or scams.
Depending on the violation, a computer crime offender faces a variety of consequences such as a fine up to $10,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both. The punishment will also depend upon the value of computer services used, the amount of damage, and prior convictions.
