Counterfeiting
Counterfeiting
Copying goods or money and then trying to pass off the imitation as genuine is called counterfeiting. Counterfeiting does not only pertain to money or documents. Clothing, DVDs, Watches, and Software are just some of the products that can be counterfeited. Counterfeiting of these products has led to increased intellectual property and copyright laws.
Increasing cases of counterfeit money have led the government to take certain measures to prevent counterfeiting altogether. In the past, money was easily duplicated through advances in computer technology. Today, US currency has several security mechanisms that discourage counterfeiting such as multi-colors, holograms, and embedded strips.
When counterfeiting involves intent to defraud it is considered a criminal offense. Counterfeiting is considered a Class C felony. It is punishable by up to 12 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000, or both.
