Date Rape
Date Rape
Date Rape refers to non-consensual sexual activity between two people who are already acquainted, or who know one another socially. This includes friends, acquaintances, people on a date, or even people in an existing relationship. It does not matter if the people know each other well, or if they have had intimate relations before, non-consensual sex is still considered rape and it is illegal. Girls and women are most often the target of rape, 1 and 3 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Date rape may involve extreme acts of violence or date rape drugs such as Rohypnol, Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB), and Ketamine Hydrochloride. These drugs are used to neutralize resistance or to render the victim unconscious. These drugs may also hinder memories of the event.
A national rape law does not exist in the United States. Instead, individual states have their own rape laws in which broader categories such as sexual assault and sexual battery apply. Traditionally, rape laws centered around the sexual assault of a female by a male. However, more attention is being brought to the sexual assault of males by females. In this sense, the rape laws are no longer gender exclusive.
Penalties for date rape vary by jurisdiction, but usually the specific crimes the offender committed will determine the charges and the sentence they will have to serve. Punishment for date rape is usually imprisonment (with post-release conditions) such as parole supervision and required registration as a sex offender. If the person is a repeat offender, they are subject to lengthier jail sentences and fines. The rape victim may also sue the rapist for physical and emotional damages in a civil court.
