Drug Importation
Drug Importation
In the United States, state and federal laws regulate the distribution and trafficking of drugs. If narcotics are illegally sold, transported or imported into the country, the federal government can charge the person importing the narcotics with a drug trafficking offense.
It is a crime for a person to import into the United States any controlled substance or any narcotic drug. It is also illegal for a person to import into the United States any non-narcotic controlled substance.
When charging a person with drug importation, law enforcement will probably look at the following factors to determine an appropriate sentence: prior similar convictions, all prior convictions, if the offender is currently on probation or parole, attitude of community in relation to this type of crime, media attention, and aggravating circumstances.
Importation is considered one of the more serious drug crimes and is prosecuted severely. Narcotic importation is usually charged as a felony offense. Punishments for importation/trafficking include, but are not limited to: fines, imprisonment, probation, house arrest, community service, drug testing, registration as a narcotics offender, loss of drivers license, and forced rehabilitation.
