Drug Trafficking
Drug Trafficking
Drug trafficking/distribution laws make the selling, transportation, and importation of unlawful controlled substances illegal and punishable. The United States prohibits the distribution of drugs such as marijuana, cannabis, hashish, opium, cocaine, crack cocaine, LSD, Ecstasy, PCP, morphine, steroids, and/or Meth.
When charging a person with drug trafficking, law enforcement will probably look at the following factors to determine an appropriate sentence: prior similar convictions, all prior convictions, if the offender is currently on probation or parole, attitude of community in relation to this type of crime, media attention, and aggravating circumstances. They will also take into consideration the type of drug trafficked, quantity, geographic area of distribution, and whether minors were sold to or targeted. After considering all factors, they will determine whether they will charge the offender with a felony or a misdemeanor.
Drug distribution/trafficking laws can implicate a single person or a broad ring of people involved in organized illegal drug activity. Drug trafficking is considered one of the more serious drug crimes and is prosecuted severely. Punishments for trafficking include, but are not limited to: fines, imprisonment, probation, house arrest, community service, drug testing, registration as a narcotics offender, loss of drivers license, and forced rehabilitation.
