Internet Theft and Fraud
Internet theft or fraud refers to any type of theft/fraud that occurs through the usage of email, chat rooms, websites, or false solicitations and scams. In 2003, internet fraud cost US companies over $500 million. The majority of internet theft cases involve criminals stealing credit card information online, and then buying costly goods with the illegally obtained information.
Types of internet fraud are classified as follow: Identity Theft Schemes (stolen credit cards and get wire transfer info), Purchase Schemes (direct solicitations, counterfeit postal money orders, cash the check system, work from home, and re-shippers), Website Scams (click fraud and online dating fraud), Phishing, and Pharming.
Internet fraud is prosecuted as a felony. Punishments for internet theft/fraud include up to 20 years imprisonment and/or monetary fines of up to $250,000.
