Prostitution
Prostitution
Prostitution is the sale of sexual services. A person providing sexual services is called a prostitute. Modern courts hold that a person soliciting a prostitute is equal to a prostitute soliciting a person. The most common form of prostitution is called street walking, in which a prostitute wanders the street in an attempt to lure customers. Another common from of prostitution is escort prostitution. In escort prostitution, the act may take place at a clients house or, more commonly, hotel room. Escort prostitution is harder to prosecute than street walking because escorts commonly make the claim that they are not engaging in any form of sexual activity with the client. Rather, they are just providing company for the client.
In all but two states in the U.S., buying and selling sexual activities is illegal. In Nevada, several counties have legalized prostitution. In Rhode Island, the act of sex for money is not illegal, but street solicitation and operating a brothel are. Solicitation of prostitution is generally charged as a misdemeanor offense. However, pimping and pandering are considered felonies. If a minor is involved, the charges are more severe and the offender will have to submit their name to their jurisdictions sex registry.
