Florida Mother Charged with Child Neglect

A woman in Ft. Pierce, Florida was arrested last week on charges of felony child neglect after police officers and officials from the Florida Department of Children and Families went to her home.

Police and DFC officials found bloody underwear, dirty condoms, and rotten food in the home 26-year-old Nicole M. Canales shares with her two small children. Investigators also found several pills on the stairs and said every room was in disarray. They also said feces were left in bathroom toilets.

According to an arrest affidavit, it appeared the children slept on a pile of dirty clothes.

Due to the alarming and unhealthy conditions, the DFC removed the children, ages 5 and 1, from the home and placed them in the custody of their grandmother.

When asked about the appalling conditions, Canales said she didn't have time to clean the home. But according to the affidavit, Canales did not give investigators any explanation as to why the home was in such an inexcusable state.
