Man in Detroit Charged with Arson and Murder

In Detroit, 25 year old Michael Scott Bush was arraigned yesterday in connection with an arson incident and fatality that occurred this past Tuesday.  Reports indicate that an 89 year old woman died because of the arson.

Mr. Bush is being charged with both felony arson and felony murder.  He is accused of killing and setting fire to the home of the 89 year old woman, named Frances Cothern.  Cothern lived in the Van Buren Township.  Police report that Cothern died from the injuries she suffered during the fire.

In Michigan, arson carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment.  Felony murder carries a penalty of life imprisonment.  This means that if Michael Scott Bush is convicted, he stands to be sentenced with life imprisonment.

At this time, no bail has been set by Al Hindman, the Magistrate presiding over the case.  Mr. Bush remains in police custody in the Wayne County Jail.
