Hurricane Evacuations Serve As Drug Dealer Meetings in New Orleans

According to The Advocate in Baton Rouge, a hurricane's damage can extend well beyond it's destruction to property and to peoples' lives.

The Advocate is reporting that drug dealers are using evacuation meetings and enforced relocations as networking venues.  Through these new means, drug dealers are able to meet and speak with other drug dealers who they did not know prior to the hurricane, which lead likely increase instances of drug crimes and violent crimes.

"Drug dealers got to meet drug dealers they didn't meet before," said Peter Scharf, a research professor at Tulane University.

"Young drug dealers from New Orleans got closer to their suppliers in west Houston. There is a stereotype that (criminals) left New Orleans for Houston. The reality is that they (go) back and forth between the two cities."

No news has been released yet regarding how law enforcement plans to deal with these new relations, but the local community has responded quite angrily.
