Two Men Sentenced To Life Imprisonment in Kansas

Recently, KansasCity.com reported that two Kansas City men were sentenced to life imprisonment for the racially motivated murder of a pedestrian in March 2005.

Gary Eye and Steven Sandstrom were convicted by a jury in May for the murder of William McCay.  McCay was walking to work when the two men confronted and killed him.  Kansas prosecutors appealed for the death penalty for both defendants, but the jury rejected the appeal.  The two defendants, both white, are believed to have killed McCay because he was black.  The defendants' actions can be described as violent crimes, hate crimes and direct violations of McCay's Civil Rights.

Eye would not comment during his sentencing hearing and Sandstrom maintains that he is not guilty for any criminal offense.  "I'm innocent of all these charges," Sandstrom said. "This was not a hate crime. Not even close to it, your honor."

McCay's mother and the rest of his family finally feel that justice has been served now that the two defendants have been found guilty and sentenced.
