Ex-Philadelphia Cop Convicted of Theft and Drug Crimes

In Philadelphia, an ex-police officer named Malik Snell was recently convicted of very serious criminal offenses.  Reports indicate that the former 36 year old officer was charged and convicted of robbery after he allegedly stole from a drug kingpin.  Snell was accused of stealing $40,000 in cash and also of participating in a home-invasion style robbery.

According to news sources, Malik Snell said he was the reluctant driver for his brother-in-law during a robbery that took place in March 2008 in Pottstown, PA.  He said that he crashed the get-away vehicle after leading law enforcement on a high speed chase.  In defense of his robbery charges, Snell told the jurors presiding over his case that he did not flash his police badge or rob the drug kingpin during a traffic stop, as prosecutors had previously accused him of doing.

Yesterday night, the federal jury convicted of all criminal charges.  Snell was also charged with weapon crimes and for issuing threats toward the drug dealer, but the jury acquitted him of those charges after being deadlocked for days.  At this time, Snell has already been in jail for a year.  He served as policeman for 11 years and is also a Marine Corps veteran.
