West Virginia Sheriff's Office Employee Arrested for Petit Larceny

According to news sources, an employee of the Wood County Sheriff's Office in West Virginia was recently caught stealing from the department.  It is being reported that Carmella (Carrie) Atkinson was recently accused of taking approximately $1,400 from the Office.

On Monday night, Atkinson was arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court where she pled guilty to the criminal charge of petit larceny.  At her arraignment, Atkinson repaid the full amount of the money she stole from the department.  Still, she was sentenced to one year of probation and was told that if she violates the terms of her probation, she would have to serve 15 days in jail.

Prior to her arrest, Atkinson worked as an administrative assistant for the Wood County Home Confinement department.  While working, she would receive cash payments from clients, which she then took for her own personal usage.

Sheriff Jeff Sandy said that, "It shows that people who steal from the citizens of Wood County will be prosecuted, and I'm just very pleased with the investigation that was conducted by the Parkersburg Police Department."  He is expecting to receive Atkinson's letter of resignation later this week.
