Would-Be Burglars, in Search of Pregnant Horse and Peat Moss, Leave Clothes Behind

As reported by The News Journal out of Corbin, KY, a man and a woman have been arrested and charged in an attempted home burglary, as the evidence of the crime far outweighed their excuses of looking for peat moss and a pregnant horse.

The female, C.L.D., also failed to provide an acceptable explanation as to why she wasn’t wearing any shoes – or a shirt.

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department reported that the pair attempted to burglarize a neighbor’s vacant home – a few yards from their own home – in the Rockholds community.

Deputies charged E.W.F., 42, with second-degree burglary and being a fugitive of Georgia. C.L.D., 40, was also charged with second-degree burglary and possession of a defaced firearm.

Both were held at the Whitley County Detention Center on March 30.

Sheriff C.H. said that neighbors were helpful in apprehending the burglars. He said, “They had called 911, and I headed that way. I feel like the neighbors should be commended for watching the property. I feel like it is a good thing to do.”

The 911 call came in at approximately 9:30 A.M. on March 31 as a possible burglary and wire theft. The home where the burglary occurred, which had been left abandoned for a while, was off of Ky. 26 opposite Ed Carr Road.

Sheriff C.H., the first to arrive at approximately 9:50 a.m., arrested E.W.F. outside of the residence. Then, a little after 10 a.m., neighbors again aided officers with information on C.L.D.

Witnesses said that C.L.D. ran from the rear of the home, jumped over a fence and head off across a creek. Witnesses also told police that “she shot out of here like a bullet” and “she’s part deer.”

Two deputies searched the woods for nearly two hours. At about 12:30 p.m. C.L.D. was caught and arrested.

C.L.D. had allegedly stripped down to a jog bra and pants – in what officers believe was an attempt to hide her identity. But neighbors, ever vigilant, had guessed it was her.

Sheriff C.H. said, “We feel pretty comfortable she was the one. We are going to charge her with it.”

C.L.D. claimed that she did not rob the home, she was there only to collect peat moss from the surrounding woods for wedding decorations.

Drug paraphernalia was seen in the couple’s home on Youngs Lane. A search warrant was obtained and officers then discovered drug residue and a defaced pistol. K-9 police were also called in to search the residence.

E.W.F. has an extensive criminal history and may be extradited to Georgia on another burglary charge.

Looking for a pregnant horse, a claim made by E.W.F., was not acceptable by the police. Sheriff C.H. remarked, “I hadn't heard that one before. Give him credit for creativity.”
