Franklin Man Being Extradited from Mexico for Church Check Theft Charges

By Franklin Law Offices, PLC  Aug. 6, 2013 1:25p

K.S. was recently extradited from Mexico when it was found that he was wanted for charges relating to the theft of nearly 200 checks that had been sent to a number of Williams County churches. The suspect is accused of taking about 170 checks out of the mail boxes of area churches and depositing them in a bank account belonging to him. The checks totaled about $100,000 and were taken from 15 different churches in the cities of Franklin, Bellevue, Brentwood, Murfreesboro and Nashville. The checks were of varying amounts as donations from parishioners. The case was being investigated by officials with the United States Secret Service, an agent of which turned over an affidavit concerning the checks to the U.S. District Court of Middle Tennessee. He was scheduled to appear in court on the charges in April but failed to do so. A warrant was placed for his arrest but authorities could not locate K.S. Secret Service agents subsequently obtained a warrant to freeze one of his bank accounts in June. Accused of a serious theft offense? The April court date was to address charges against K.S. for felony theft over $500, theft over $1,000, making false reports to a police officer and domestic assault. K.S. had been charged with the theft of about $17,000 in pool rental funds when he lived in Indiana in 2010. He was a high school swim coach at the time but the charges were dismissed. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office stated that no federal charges have been filed as yet in regard to the current case. The suspect faces the possibility of many years behind bars if he is found guilty of the charges.
