Houston DWI Attorney Jay Cohen Successfully Completes Gas Chromatography VII Certification

By Jay Cohen February 02, 2013

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) February 02, 2013

Jay Cohen Attorney at Law recently completed the rigorous Gas Chromatography VII course in Chicago, Illinois. This five day, 40-hour course equips lawyers with the forensic testing knowledge necessary to fight prosecutors using blood or urine sample test results as part of their argument. Jay Cohen has joined the ranks of a select few criminal defense attorneys throughout the United States with the forensic science knowledge necessary to successfully battle modern DWI and drug charge cases.

The Gas Chromatography VII Certification is an upper level forensic science course, specifically designed to educate criminal defense attorneys about the procedures and science used in blood and urine samples by the Department of Justice. State and federal prosecutors present gas chromatography (GC) results as fact in court, when technically the GC method is extremely flawed. According to forensic science expert, Lecturer for the American Chromatography Society (ACS), and one of the teachers of Jay Cohen’s GC class Justin J. McShane:

“The forensic science community as currently practiced in the United States today is very flawed. Extremely flawed. Fundamentallyflawed. In some cases, if not the majority of cases, it is utterly unscientific." (McShane, 2012)

This is why it is so important that drug and DWI lawyers stay abreast of new forensic testing policies, procedures, and methodology. Forensic evidence is presented in court that has the potential to almost single handedly sway a jury one way or another. The criminal defense attorney must have the knowledge to pin point flaws and known deviations that cause incorrect GC test results, to ensure each juror holds the state to their burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

As of July 2012 there were only 121 graduates of the ACS Forensic Chromatography VII course throughout the country. Jay Cohen is proud to announce his indoctrination into this group of criminal defense lawyers who believe that continuing forensic education in the legal field promotes justice for defendants. Only by embracing and studying the innovative technology used to process and test evidence can a drug lawyer defend his or her clients to the best of their ability.

Jay Cohen's practice focuses primarily on driving while intoxicated and drug cases. These cases usually involve forensic analysis of blood, breath or urine. They also involve standardized field sobriety testing, and Jay Cohen is a certified instructor in standardized field sobriety testing as well as a practitioner. As a DWI attorney in Houston, Jay Cohen has represented countless clients facing alcohol and drug related charges. His areas of practice include:

  • DWI
  • DUI
  • Drug Possession
  • Drug Manufacturing
  • Drug Trafficking
  • Record Expunction

Jay Cohen is the founding attorney of the firm Jay Cohen Attorney at Law in Houston, Texas. He is a member in good standing of the State Bar of Texas, member of the Houston Bar Association, and also the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (NACDL). In addition to the GC certification, Jay Cohen is also a certified Practitioner in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, and a certified Instructor in Standardized Field Sobriety Texting.
