17-year-old M.B. of Jacksonville has been charged with a number of serious offenses including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after a friend of his died in a severe single vehicle wreck. M.B. was driving an SUV just outside of Jacksonville with three 15-year-old friends when he lost control of the vehicle. The teen was traveling on Rocky Run Road at approximately 70 mph in a 55 mph zone and failed to navigate the roadway. The SUV went flying off the road over a small waterway and into some trees. The vehicle struck several trees primarily on the front passenger side of the SUV. All four teens suffered serious injuries but Z.A. who was in the front seat was the most severely injured and died at the scene. M.B. and the two other teens were rushed to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the accident but Florida Highway Patrol said that speed was likely a factor in the fatal crash. M.B. was arrested and then released into his parents' custody but will be in court in early June on charges of reckless driving, exceeding safe speed for conditions, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and was cited for violating the terms of his provisional driving license which doesn't allow the driver to drive between 9:00pm and 5:00am.
