A woman who worked for the Dallas County District Clerk's Office while pursuing a doctorate in mathematics is facing the possibility of serious fines and incarceration after being accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the office. S.Y., 32 years old, was fired from the office's trust, accounting and collections department after an audit allegedly exposed that she had been stealing money from the office. The investigation reports state that a regular audit of the department's records showed that an unusually high number of receipts for cash had been voided. These receipts were mostly for times when an individual paid cash in order to obtain a duplicate of some official records or documents. S.Y. worked as a manager who was in charge of ensuring that the transactions in the department were accurate. She is accused of taking the cash that came to her with the receipts from document fees (investigators say individuals did get the requested documents they paid for) and voiding a number of the receipts. This would make it so she could keep the money herself by making it look as if the department never actually received the funds.
It is suspected that S.Y. stole between $20,000 and $100,000 in this manner. S.Y. has no previous criminal record and had been with the district clerk's office for a number of years. In fact, she had received high praise from superiors for her "exceptional work ethic" and for being a "tremendous asset" as well as other commendations. She currently stands charged with second-degree felony theft and has been released on bond. If convicted she could be punished with up to $10,000 in fines, 20 years in prison as well as restitution.
