Theft Crime Leads to Extensive Manhunt

By Law Office of John Harvell  Jan. 23, 2012 4:17p

The police search began not too long after a vehicle had been reported stolen. A highway patrol officer spotted the stolen vehicle, a dark-colored SUV, and began pursuit. The SUV with two men in it refused to pull over when signaled by the officer. The chase proceeded across several counties until the men abandoned the car and attempted to elude officers on foot. The men separated after leaving the SUV in a field near a suburban neighborhood. People living in the area were warned to remain indoors while an extensive search was conducted for the two men. One man was believed to be armed with a stolen shotgun. Don't hesitate to contact an Olathe criminal defense attorney if you or someone you care about has been arrested or charged with a crime in Kansas.

Several law enforcement agencies joined forces in the search providing ground and air units. Police apprehended one of the suspects after a local resident called to report that one of his outdoor lights with a motion sensor had turned on. Police arrived with search dogs and found one of the suspects hiding under the deck of the man's home. The second suspect was found and taken into custody not long after.

Kansas Theft Crime Penalties

The penalties for an alleged theft offense in the state of Kansas vary depending on the value of the property involved and the specific circumstances of the theft. While some theft crimes, such as shoplifting, grand theft auto, burglary, etc., may not involve any sort of violence, the penalties can still be severe. You could be facing serious fines and imprisonment. In cases involving robbery, carjacking or any use of force or threats of bodily harm where weapons are employed, the penalties are especially severe. Felony punishment including years in prison are not uncommon.
