Arrest Latest In String Of Heroin Busts By New York State Police

In the wake of multiple deaths believed to be the result of heroin overdoses in Westchester County, officials with the New York State Police say they are stepping up enforcement efforts against local suppliers. After a routine traffic stop by troopers with the state agency, two suspects were arrested when a large quantity of the drug was allegedly discovered in their vehicle.

According to the initial reports filed by law enforcement officers, the stop occurred on January 8th when a trooper noticed a vehicle engage in a traffic violation in Somers. After pulling the car over, the officer claims to have discovered a syringe in the vehicle, as well as 106 packets of heroin, totaling approximately 32 grams. The drugs are estimated as having a street value of around three thousand dollars.

Authorities placed the driver and passenger, a 23-year old man and woman, under arrest. They have each been charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, as well as criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, both felony crimes. The pair will be back in Somers for a court date on January 14th.

The crackdown on heroin distribution began, police claim, after a series of deaths in Somers and Putnam County that were linked to heroin overdoses. Working in conjunction with several local agencies, including the Community Narcotics Enforcement Team and the Westchester District Attorney's Narcotics Initiative, state police have begun a series of busts, including three felony charges of heroin distribution in late December.

Investigators say they hope to curb the recent rise in heroin usage among teens and young adults in Upstate New York. The two most recent suspects have been remanded to Westchester County Jail, where they are being held without bail.
