Obama Urges Congress to Act on Gun Control

By Law Offices of Jacqueline Goodman  Jan. 31, 2013 12:10p

In the wake of the recent incident of violent mass shootings of children and school officials in Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama has announced 23 executive actions geared towards the reduction of gun violence in the U.S. These are actions he can take without the approval of Congress. They alone, however, cannot handle the problem which is why the President has called on Congress to take action and to do so quickly. Some of the executive actions include maximizing enforcement of preventive measures against gun violence as well as maximizing prosecutions of weapon crimes.

In a report by CBS News, it was revealed that the President is requesting that Congress make background checks mandatory for any and all gun purchasers, regardless of whether the gun is sold from a private seller or otherwise. He also wants Congress to ban military-type assault weapons and put a limit on ammunition magazines to 10 rounds. Additionally, he hopes to get studies and research done on gun violence. His other request of Congress is for the confirmation of the present candidate for Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). No Director of the ATF has been confirmed in six years and it is believed that an ATF Director will make a difference in the fight against gun violence.
