J.C. was taken into custody by police on a recent Saturday evening for trying to get strangers to take his three-year-old son with them. The 31-year-old father was observed by security at a Greyhound bus station offering the toddler to various individuals at the station. J.C. allegedly asked several people to take his son but they declined. Reports state that the father then attempted to leave his son at the station but was stopped by security before he left the building. Police were called to the downtown Chicago station and J.C. was arrested. The three-year-old boy was transferred to the care of the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS). The little boy was not harmed and officials are attempting to locate his mother. J.C. was charged with child endangerment which is a misdemeanor offense. It is suspected that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident but no further details were released. Charged with a crime in the Chicago area?

Criminal charges can result in severe penalties if you are found guilty of the alleged offense. Even a misdemeanor charge can mean jail time, harsh fines, probation and other punishment. The charge of "child endangerment" can be brought against the parent or guardian of a child or teen under 18 when that individual is suspected of acting in "a manner that creates a substantial risk to a child or minor's physical, mental or emotional health or safety" according to section 726.6 of Illinois state laws. The law also specifically states that this charge can be assessed against a parent who "Abandons the child or minor to fend for the child or minor's self, knowing that the child or minor is unable to do so." If the suspect is accused of committing a drug crime or other offense in the presence of the child then felony child endangerment or child abuse charges may result.
