Guns, Drugs and Cash Seized at Chicago Apartment

By Law Offices of Mitch Furman & Associates  Oct. 22, 2013 11:36a

Chicago Police officers recently arrested three men and seized over $1.2 million in drugs, cash and firearms. Reports do not state how the arrests and seizures began but a 59-year-old man was taken into custody on a warrant for a separate investigation and also charged with possession of a controlled substance. A search of the man's apartment resulted in the confiscation of $44,000 cash and four guns. Two of the firearms had been reported stolen. Additionally, officers seized large amounts of drugs including nearly 200 pounds of marijuana (estimated value of $1.1 million) as well as unspecified amounts of cocaine, crystal meth and ecstasy. Two other men, ages 31 and 33, were also taken into custody. The 33-year-old man was charged with possession of cannabis and the third man faces serious charges for possession of cannabis, three counts of possession of a controlled substance and three counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon. Additional charges and arrests may be forthcoming as investigations into the case continue. Drug offense charges are taken very seriously by authorities and prosecutors so make sure you have a talented criminal defense attorney on your side.

About Drug Crime Charges

The severity of drug charges can vary significantly depending on the exact circumstances of every instance of an alleged offense. Whether an individual is charged with a felony or misdemeanor crime depends on what type of drug the suspect is accused of being in possession of, how much of it there was and what the intention was for the drug (personal use versus distribution or sales). Drugs such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines in even small amounts can mean felony charges and a year or more in jail. Being found in possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use may be a misdemeanor. Misdemeanors are generally punished by up to a year of jail time, fines, probation, community service and the possibility of mandatory drug abuse counseling.
