Heavy Duty Firearms and other Equipment Stolen from CHP Vehicle

By Law Offices of Robert M. Bernstein  Sep. 9, 2013 4:05p

Officers with the California Highway Patrol were conducting a training exercise recently when guns, ammunition and other items were stolen out of one of the CHP vehicles. Reports state that officers were doing a training exercise just outside of LA proper on a weekday afternoon and apparently at least one of the vehicles had been left unlocked and unattended. A description of the vehicle was not given so it may or may not have had CHP identification markings on the outside. In total, six fire arms, handcuff keys, a bulletproof vest and a patrolman's badge were stolen. The missing weapons include two handguns (Smith & Wesson .40 caliber), two AR-15 semiautomatic rifles and two shotguns. Some of the equipment was recovered at a location in South Los Angeles but the firearms were not among the items recovered. No arrests have been made. The investigation into the serious theft is ongoing and no suspect names have been released to the public as yet. Begin working with a knowledgeable criminal defense attorney immediately if you have been accused of committing a theft crime.

About Theft Charges

Theft offenses may be charged as a misdemeanor or felony. The circumstances of the alleged theft are what determine which charges are brought against a suspect. Examples of misdemeanor charges include petty theft (theft of money, labor or property valuing $400 or less), certain burglary charges, shoplifting lower valued items, etc. Felony charges are assessed in cases involving carjacking, grand theft (theft of property or cash over $400), grand theft auto, robbery, shoplifting higher valued items. The use or possession of weapons at the time of a robbery can enhance the charges as well as theft incidents involving the injury or death of a victim. Theft of a firearm or vehicle is an automatic grand theft charge and could result in serious felony punishment including years in prison and thousands in fines.
