Parole Refused For Political Assassin

Robert F. Kennedy's Killer Denied Early Release

In a hearing before a parole board on Wednesday, March 2nd, Sirhan Sirhan begged for an early release and the chance to start anew, reports Time Magazine.

The 66-year old, hair now beginning to go grey with advancing age, told the parole board commissioners that he felt deep sorrow and regret every day. He wished only to 'get lost in the woodwork' and try to live a normal life. He was aware that he might potentially be deported to his native Jordan if released, and said this was an acceptable outcome. Reportedly cheerful and upbeat, he told reporters that he was a good Christian who attended services every Sunday.

The panel members were concerned in part by his alleged inability to remember the events of the assassination. They informed Sirhan that he demonstrated inadequate understanding of his crime, and told him he must show more improvement in his mental state and continue attending self-help classes before his next parole hearing in five years.

Discrimination in Prison For Assassin

The infamous assassin has already served 42 years since his conviction in 1969.

A year previously, Sirhan had shot and killed Senator Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, wounding an additional five. The Senator was holding a victory celebration after clinching the California Democratic primary against Vice President Humphrey. At the time, secret service did not provide security for presidential candidates, only current and former presidents.

Sirhan was initially sentenced to death, over the objections of the rest of the Kennedy family, but his sentence was changed to life in prison when California outlawed the death penalty in 1972.

He is currently in solitary confinement to protect him from other inmates.
