Drug Investigation Nabs 35 Alleged Gang Members

Federal Agents Work With LAPD To Investigate Drug Operation

A major operation reached the next phase of the criminal justice process last Thursday when at least 35 alleged gang members were arrested on drug indictments, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The pre-dawn raid targeted members of the Black P Stones Gang, a notorious organization that according to law enforcement officers has held the small neighborhood of Baldwin Village in its firm grip for decades. Hundreds of local police department officers as well as federal agents swarmed over the 1-square-mile area, wearing heavy body armor and carrying dozens of federal indictments into the fray. The small southwestern Los Angeles neighborhood is home to what officers claim are as many as 700 members of the gang. As the investigators rounded up dozens of alleged leaders of the gang, they were moved to the L.A. Sports Arena complex in preparation to be taken into custody, where a bus was spotted on-hand to help organize the detainees.

Investigation Wraps Up After A Year

The multi-agency operation involved co-operation between multiple Los Angeles precincts under the leadership of federal operatives, who carried out the drug investigation over the course of a year. No details of the indictments have been released, but spokespeople with the LAPD have said that nearly all the charges are related to drug trafficking.

Located amongst several upper and middle class neighborhoods, Baldwin Village has been nicknamed 'The Jungle' by residents due to the large variety of tropical trees and plants littering the area. The lower income projects have allegedly been the home to the Black P Stones Gang for almost thirty years. It had previously been the target of a federal raid just six years ago, where 28 leaders of the gang were arrested on narcotics offenses.
