Police Broaden Search for Driver of Vehicle

After a 71-year old man was hit and killed while riding his bike on Sherman Way, police search for clues as to the identity of the person responsible, reports NBC Los Angeles.

According to the report issued by police investigating the slaying, the tragic accident occurred on Saturday, May 14th, in broad daylight. The 71-year old resident of Canoga Park had been riding his bike that morning, and was attempting to travel Sherman Way, riding at the south crosswalk, heading east at approximately 12:15 p.m. As he did so, he was struck by what police believe to be a small, black 4-door sports utility vehicle. The driver of the car was also heading east, and the collision was caused when the SUV attempted to make a right turn onto Canoga Avenue, ramming the cyclist and knocking him to the ground.

Police Solicit Tips Via Email

Detectives reconstructing the scene said that they SUV driver failed to stop and get out of the car, instead speeding off and fleeing the scene. Drivers who get in accidents are required by law to stop and render aid or at least identify themselves, police told reporters. The driver of the sports utility vehicle is now wanted for hit-and-run and possibly manslaughter.

Emails were sent by the Los Angeles Police Department, asking people to help identify and catch the missing driver. The email urges anyone with information about the accident to call one of several hotlines available including one specifically designed to allow callers to remain anonymous. In addition, the email says, it is possible to text information to police, or use an online service at the LAPD website to send 'webtips'. Police hope that witness information can help them solve the case.

The victim was taken to the hospital after the accident, where he later died of his wounds after two days.
