Federal Prosecutors Indict Suspects In Utah, California, and Idaho

In breaking news from Utah, a federal investigation into an alleged methamphetamine distribution ring resulted in twenty arrests last Wednesday night.

11 suspects in the case are being held by authorities on suspected immigration violations. The rest will be attending hearings next week. The arrests reached across state borders, with many taking place in Salt Lake City, Summit and Wasatch counties, and in California and Idaho.

The federal agents were working in conjunction with local departments, as well as other federal branches. FBI spokeswoman Debbie Dujanovic Bertram told reporters that the investigation was a "major collaborative effort" between the Bureau, Customs and Immigration Enforcement, and the Utah Major Crimes Task Force.

Prosecutors Remain Tight-Lipped About Details

Though the arrests have received a fair amount of publicity, the FBI and federal attorneys have refused to release many details about the case. The indictments were unsealed by a grand jury on Wednesday night, and the arrests began immediately.

No information about the identity of the suspects or their ties to any known drug cartels has yet surfaced. Officials have stated that while the group is charged with distribution of methamphetamine, they have not been accused of manufacture of the drugs. It is believed that they were receiving the meth from Mexico or possibly somewhere else.

The meth distribution charge is a federal felony offense, with a minimum prison sentence of ten years.
