Murder Suspect Arrested After Fleeing To Arizona, Investigators Allege

After learning of the violent killing of a young UC Santa Barbara graduate, authorities say the prime suspect, her college boyfriend, had left the state. He was picked up by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department several hours later.

According to a report filed by the Orange County police, they received a call from the suspect's mother, alerting them to an emergency in the 22200 block of Caminito Tasquillo, Laguna Hills. By the time they arrived at the scene of the crime, they found the mother attempting to give CPR to the victim, but were unable to revive her. The 23-year old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, having succumbed to multiple stab wounds.

The suspect had allegedly fled the state, and investigators soon learned that his family had a home in Mesa, Arizona. The 25-year old man was arrested outside his father's house by sheriffs with the Maricopa County Department.

Boyfriend's Motive For Stabbing Unclear

Investigators claim that the victim was the girlfriend of the suspect, after the two met at UC Santa Barbara. She had remained living in Santa Barbara, while the boyfriend had moved in with his mother at their Laguna Hills home.

The murder is alleged to have taken place at approximately 10:00 AM, when the victim was stabbed an unknown number of times. The suspect's mother discovered the body shortly thereafter, and contacted the authorities. The man was believed to have fled in a black Honda, crossing state lines into Arizona shortly before being picked up by law enforcement agents. Investigators are still uncertain as to what prompted the tragic killing.

The suspect is being charged with felony murder, with a sentencing enhancement for use of a deadly weapon. He is being held in Arizona on a $1 million bond, and is in the process of being extradited back to California.
