Eight Years in Prison for Drug Offender

By The Law Offices of Matthew Cargal  Jan. 9, 2014 2:40p

The FBI issued a press release early last month stating that a repeat felony offender was sentenced to eight years in prison in a Tacoma federal court. The defendant was out of prison on supervised release when he was founding selling large quantities of oxycodone and in possession of a firearm. The firearm and drugs were found in a storage locker along with large sums of cash. Convicted felons released from prison are prohibited from owning or carrying guns.

The case was developed when someone who worked with law enforcement bought 100 oxycodone pills from the defendant. After that a search warrant was obtained to search various premises used by the defendant. In the storage locker and other locations, investigators found $40,000 in cash, a semi-automatic pistol, and more than 1,200 oxycodone pills as well as marijuana. The defendant had prior convictions related to drug dealing, assault, and possession of a gun.

Drug crimes may be investigated by local, state, or federal authorities and may be prosecuted in state or federal courts. When large quantities of illegal drugs are involved related to drug distribution and trafficking, it often becomes a matter for the FBI or DEA, as in this case. Anyone arrested and charged by a federal law enforcement agency will need a defense attorney who is licensed to practice in federal court.
