Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey were published in 2000 by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The report shows the results of a national survey conducted on 8,000 women and 8,000 men related to their experiences as victims of violence, including domestic violence or abuse, also known as intimate partner violence (IPV). The findings revealed that 25 percent of the women surveyed had experienced some type of IPV at some point in their lifetime, such as rape or physical assault by a spouse, ex-spouse, cohabiting partner, or someone they had dated. 1.5 percent of the women had experienced some form of domestic violence in the last year. Based on the statistics gathered, the NIJ / CDC estimates that about 1.5 million women are raped or physically assaulted by an intimate partner every year in this country. Furthermore, because many are victimized more than once by the same partner, the number of victimizations annually can be as high as 4.8 million.

The survey demonstrated that women have a higher likelihood of suffering domestic violence than men, whether it is in the last year or throughout their lifetime. They receive more injuries through such violence than men. Results showed that women averaged 6.9 incidents of domestic assault from the same partner while men averaged 4.4 assaults. Results also showed that 41.5 percent of women were physically injured in the most recent incident of domestic violence while approximately 20 percent of men who were assaulted sustained injuries. The researchers in the study stressed that measures focused on preventing violence against women should be implemented.

Unfortunately, many cases of alleged domestic violence are based on exaggerated or false claims by the accuser. These cases may be prompted by the desire on the part of one party to gain the upper hand in a legal battle related to divorce or child custody or merely to get even or revenge for perceived wrongs in the intimate relationship. When such situations occur, the accused can face severe legal consequences which can have long-term negative effects, such as jail time, heavy fines, loss of contact with children, and the loss of other civil rights.
