Former Police Officer Accused In DWI Hit-and-Run

By The Martinez Law Firm  Apr. 29, 2013 10:50a

The defendant in a recent DWI case in Houston has been identified as a former member of the local police force. Retiring in 2009, this incident will mark the third such charge leveled at the beleaguered former law enforcement official.

According to reports filed by witnesses to the incident, the driver was traveling at speeds of as much as 60 miles per hour when he lost control of his vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, on Thursday, March 21st of 2013. An eyewitness claims that while the man was allegedly speeding down the 6200 block of FM 1960 in Harris County, his tires blew out, sending him spiraling out of control and into a nearby parking lot. The truck went careening into a nearby building housing a lighting company, known as the Lightning Gallery.

Third DWI Charge For Retired HPD Man

The unit was unoccupied, as the owner had closed down a few minutes earlier. A family member of the owner told reporters it was a miracle that the incident took place when it did, and not while the building was full of customers. Eyewitnesses to the crash say glass, bricks and other debris were littered about the scene as the truck driver attempted to back out of the wreckage. The vehicle was caught on camera backing away and driving, heavily damaged, down FM 1960.

Authorities later arrested the former officer at an apartment complex down the road, and charged him with DWI and fleeing the scene of a crime. This is the third DWI charge the man has been accused of, the first taking place in 2008 when he was still an officer with the HPD. That charge would be dismissed. The defendant is accused of another DWI in connection with an incident that took place a month before, in February 2013.
