North Texas Man Accused of Murder in Sheriff’s Death

By The Martinez Law Firm  Apr. 24, 2013 3:50p

A repeat drunk driver who hit a Sheriff's deputy who was directing traffic has been charged with murder in North Texas. The deputy, who worked for the Grayson County Sheriff's office, was hit by the man's car when he was directing traffic near U.S. Highway 82. The deputy later died at a local hospital. The drunk driver apparently fled the scene of the accident at the time it occurred. He was later found and arrested. The driver, R.T.S., was arrested for drunk driving last August and had other prior convictions extending back to 2002 and 2004. He was charged this month with intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer, failing to stop and render aid, driving with an invalid license, and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Intoxication manslaughter in Texas is generally charged as a second-degree felony, punishable by not less than two and up to 20 years in prison, fines of up to $10,000, and court costs. If granted probation, those convicted will have to serve a minimum of 120 days in jail and may be required to perform 200 to 400 hours of community service, will be required to install at their own expense an ignition interlock device in their vehicle, be evaluated for an alcohol or drug problem and required to pay for any recommended treatment, complete a DWI education class, may be required to consume no alcohol during the probation period, and may be required to attend a victim's impact panel. Probation terms are subject to the court; the judge may impose other requirements at his or her discretion.
