Texas Teen Charged with Killing Mother

By The Martinez Law Firm  Mar. 5, 2013 3:47p

A 16 year-old teenager has been charged in connection with the killing of her mother in Texas along with a 22 year-old male neighbor. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the man confessed to the crime of stabbing the mother in her bed. The teenager told law enforcement that two men broke into the home and killed her mother in contrast to the man's story. The mother, who was stabbed several times, died at the scene. The man's attorney claimed his client's innocence, stating he had evidence and videos that will prove his case. The attorney asserted that the teenager was blaming his client in error and may have done so to protect herself or someone else in the crime.

Though the teenager is a juvenile, she can be tried as an adult in such a serious crime as murder. In such cases, a certification hearing is held which will determine the issue. Texas courts may certify teenagers aged 15 and up for the prosecution of murder and other violent crimes. If certified by the juvenile court as an adult, a juvenile faces the same penalties as an adult would; no protections are afforded them which are typical to juveniles handled in the juvenile court system. Harris County courts have prosecuted more teenagers as adults than four other Texas counties combined; half of all underage teenagers in Texas state prisons are from Harris County.
