$50M Belgium Diamond Heist, 31 People Detained

According to world news reports, a large group of individuals were detained for a $50 million diamond heist at the Brussels Airport. Catherine De Wolf of the Antwerp World Diamond Center said that their traders lost millions of dollars in the heist that occurred on February 18th these years, though the news the people have been caught brings the organization much joy. Records show that a number of baggage carts were used at the airport to steal millions of dollars value in diamonds, and three months later investigators were able to find those involved.

Police say the Antwerp diamonds were loaded onto a plane that was headed to Zurich, when the diamonds were taken. The robbers dressed themselves in dark police uniforms, highjack a police car and drove it into the airport by cutting a hole in the fence. They turned the flashing police lights on to appear legitimate. Their operation took exactly five minutes to conduct; they approached the plane, showed their machine guns, loaded the diamonds onto their vehicle and disappeared. Police claim even once they locate the diamonds; it will be a difficult and extensive process to check they are the proper ones due to size, weight and purity.

What the investigators called an "Ocean's Eleven" type diamond theft; these robbers who participated in this act used "clockwork precision" to pull off this spectacular heist. However, after three months of silence on the matter, law enforcement officials were able to conduct a sweep, detaining 31 one people who were allegedly involved in the great act. This sweep spanned across three different countries including Belgium, France and Switzerland both this Tuesdays and Wednesday. Reports on the raid claim that some of the people who have been detained have prior criminal history. During the sweep, the authorities gathered much evidence from the carious people including precious stones, luxury cars, and excessive amounts of cash.

There were allegedly 250 policemen involved in the large raid that occurred in the capital of Belgium, and 24 people were detained there. At this point the authorities are trying to build their case, and they are uncertain as to how many people out of this large group that they will actually be able to arrest and charge with the crimes. While word has leaked that one man who was arrested in France was believed to be one of the robbers on the job, no news about the suspected roles each of the 3 people may have played has been released yet. A spokesperson for the prosecution claims that they do believe they found on the precious Geneva stones that was taken which could link them to the cache that was stolen from the airport three months ago.

This particular diamond heist has been likened to be one of the greatest heists in recent history, namely because of the precise execution of the act; something took everyone by surprise. Jean-Marc Meilleur, a spokesperson from the Brussels prosecution office claims they have been catching wind of evidence related to the heist including large money trails in Belgium and diamonds in Switzerland, among many luxury cars. At this point the prosecution is not releasing any details about what lead them to the trails of the 31 suspected individuals at this time.

He does report, however, that at the time of the raid, they were able to seize a large quantity of diamonds they believe to have been the very ones stolen from their airport. Though very little information has been released about the suspects, it is believe that a lawyer and a businessman were among those arrested in Switzerland carrying some of these diamonds.
