Former Kentucky Wildcat Confronts Felony Bad Check Charges

By De Castroverde Law Group  Jan. 7, 2011 4:20p

This past June, 33-year-old Antoine Walker, a former University of Kentucky basketball player was charged with bad check writing in Las Vegas after racking up gambling debts totaling one million dollars in three different casinos. He had made an agreement to pay off the debts to the Red Rock Resort, Planet Hollywood and Caesar's Palace Casinos. The agreement apparently was not kept and Walker was ordered to stand trial on the charges that he had not repaid the debts.

Failure to pay gambling debts or "markers" is the same as writing bad checks in Nevada and Walker was assessed with three bad check charges for each casino he owed money to. He declared bankruptcy (Chapter 7) in Florida the month prior which is a factor that would be considered in the case. In his bankruptcy filing, he stated that he had 4.3 million in assets, but also had 12. 7 million in liabilities.

Consequences

A person who is charged with bad check writing can face felony charges in Nevada as it is a criminal offense to knowingly write a check that is not covered by funds. One can be sentenced to prison, heavy monetary fines, probation, restitution to the victims and further penalties.
