Florida Mom Charged With Assault after Hazing Incident

By Kinsell, Zadel & Whitaker  Dec. 11, 2010 5:35p

In Orlando, Florida, on December 2010, Rena Denson, age 49 of Ocoee, FL was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after she allegedly drove her car on to the football field at Dr. Phillips High School this last September. This supposedly happened the same day her son Darrion McCray was beaten by his football teammates in the school's locker room. This was her reaction to the football team's hazing of her teenage son.

Her son Darrion, age 15 was hospitalized after the attack, although the severity of his injuries remains unknown. Subsequently, six members of the football team have been charged with misdemeanors. Darrion and his older brother are now attending a different high school.

Ocala Assault Defense Attorney

Assault is the threat to cause bodily harm, coupled with the present ability to carry out the harmful act against another person. In order for an individual to be charged with assault, contact does not have to take place. This is where assault and battery differs; battery would involve actual physical contact whereas assault merely requires the threat and the ability to carry out that threat.

Assault charges can involve many different factors. As in the case with Rena Denson, she was charged with aggravated assault even though she did not actually harm anyone. The fact that her automobile could have killed someone and she drove it on the football field in a fit of rage, was reason enough for law enforcement to charge her with assault with a deadly weapon, despite the fact that no physical bodily harm took place.
