Charges Reduced in Domestic Violence Case against Miami Doctor

By Parks & Braxton, PA  Oct. 15, 2013 3:30p

A Miami plastic surgeon, O.L., was facing serious felony charges stemming from an April incident with his girlfriend. The 41-year-old man was originally charged with false imprisonment, kidnapping, attempted murder, strongarm robbery and tampering with a witness—all felonies. He also faced a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief. According to arrest reports, O.L.'s girlfriend said that the doctor became very angry with her after seeing a message on Facebook that she posted. He allegedly grabbed her by the hair and dragged her in to the bathroom. Then he put her head in the toilet and started forcing her head onto the floor. She said he forced her go with him to a convenience store where he took her phone from her and smashed it. The girlfriend said this went on for about 16 hours during which time he would not let her leave or make any phone calls. O.L. was eventually arrested and jailed. He was later released on $100,000 bond. Make sure you are represented by a skilled criminal defense attorney if you have been accused of domestic violence or other offense.

District Attorney's Office Reduces Charges

O.L.'s defense lawyer contested the charges against his client earlier this year during initial court hearings on the case. Prosecutors and investigators with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office did a thorough review of all the evidence and reports and determined that the charges should be reduced and consolidated into a misdemeanor case. The five felony charges (and one misdemeanor) were reduced to two counts of misdemeanor battery. While these are still serious domestic violence charges, the surgeon now faces the possibility of up to a year in jail and fines as opposed to five years or more behind bars and substantially higher fines and fees.
