Maryland Substitute Teacher Accused of Sex Crimes

By The Law Offices of Douglas H. Ridley  Mar. 19, 2013 4:20p

A 28 year-old woman who was a longtime substitute teacher at a high school in Maryland was recently charged with sending sexually explicit material via texts to one of her teenage students. After being charged with sending obscene material to a minor and solicitation of child pornography, the woman turned herself into law enforcement. She had apparently sent and received nude photos with the teenage boy prior to his turning 18. After he turned 18, she began having sex with the student. The teacher faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the sexually-related felonies.

A Delaware woman who worked at a middle school in Delaware as a teacher's aid was accused of having sex with a 14 year-old for a period of 10 months in 2012. The woman was charged with 10 counts of third-degree rape, continuous child abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child. In the past decade, more than 25 cases involving teachers, substitute teachers, and teacher's aides involved in sex crimes concerning minors have surfaced across the United States. Sentences in the cases have ranged from various terms of probation to ten year prison sentences.
