Mexican Immigration Official Arrested at U.S. Border for Marijuana Possession

A U.S. law enforcement official has confirmed that a Mexican immigration officer has been arrested for possession of marijuana.

U.S. border inspectors found about 169 pounds of marijuana in the pickup truck of Mexican official Francisco Celaya-Carrillo. According to officials, Celaya-Carrillo told U.S. Customs and Border Protection that he was entering the United States to shop.

Celaya-Carrillo was crossing the border in Lukeville, Arizona when border officials examined his vehicle with a non-invasive gamma ray machine. The result was the discovery of 79 packages of marijuana, just under 169 pounds, hidden in the spare tire and fuel tank.

According Customs spokesmen Brian Levin, at least one person has been arrested. Levin declined to identify who was arrested, saying the case had been turned over to the U.S. attorney's office.

A spokeswoman at the U.S. attorney's office in Phoenix also declined to comment on the arrest, saying it's part of an active investigation.
