Nursing Home Worker Charged for Beating Elderly Resident

A nursing home worker in Lufkin, Texas has been arrested and charged for beating a 77-year-old resident at the nursing home.

Johnetta Dashaw Phillips of Castle Pines Nursing Home has been charged with injury to the elderly after police investigators reviewed video footage of her repeatedly striking Bonita Bolin.

Police were tipped off about the abuse by Bolin's husband, Melvin Bolin.  Mr. Bolin said that his wife told him that she was being hit by a staff member at the nursing home.  Mr. Bolin installed a hidden video camera in her room, and when Bolin told her husband that she had been hit again, Mr. Bolin contacted the police and turned over the video.

The footage captured two separate incidences in which Phillips struck Bolin. The first incident occurred on June 13, 2009, when Phillips grabbed Bolin's right arm and twisted it down forcefully.  Phillips is then seen striking Bolin three times on her right arm. The second incident occurred on July 14, 2009, when Phillips picks up a doll on Bolin's lap and strikes Bolin with the doll across her chest. That same day, Phillips was filmed roughly moving Bolin from a wheelchair to her bed, causing her to hit her head on the headboard.

Both incidences were completely unprovoked.

Phillips is currently being held in jail on a $100,000 bond.
