Teen Sentenced for Vehicular Manslaughter in New York

In New York, 19 year old Kori Gushlaw was sentenced this past Wednesday in Oswego County Court.  Gushlaw was sentenced after pleading guilty to second degree vehicular manslaughter.  She received a sentence of one to four years in a state prison for her crime.

Gushlaw was charged with vehicular manslaughter after she crashed her car into a tree on West Stone Road on November 11, 2008.  The crash led to the death of her boyfriend, Shane Hammond, who had been riding as Gushlaw's passenger.  According to reports, Gushlaw was also injured during the accident and had originally been charged with vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter, DWI and several traffic infractions.

Aside from having to serve time in prison, Gushlaw will have to pay for her boyfriend's funeral expenses, which equal $11,000.

A sentence of probation and weekends in jail, which had been recommended by the probation department, was dismissed in September by the judge presiding over Gushlaw's case.
