Prominent Figure in Detroit Facing Fraud Charges

A prominent figure in Detroit now faces multiple charges, including fraud.

According to official reports Dr. Gwendolyn Washington, 67, plead guilty last week to two charges of fraud against the Detroit Public School system.  She is believed to have stolen million from the DPS in a kickback scheme where she wrote thousands of fake prescriptions, mostly for addictive pain-killers, and then sold them on the street.

In addition Washington has been charged with sending fake claims to Medicare for unwarranted medical procedures and for deceased patients. She will need to explain herself at a bond hearing this week before U.S. District Judge Paul Borman.  Part of her current bond conditions prevents Washington from writing any more prescriptions, even to herself.

Police investigators found that she and her co-conspirators have been running this fraud scheme since at least September of last year.
