Sex trafficking, which can be categorized as a sex crime, is a large problem in New York; the state's human trafficking law happens to be the most comprehensive in the country affording law enforcement new ways to combat this extensive problem.

Sex trafficking is something that many people are not particularly even aware of as it a crime where the victims are hidden from view and it occurs in places like massage parlors, brothels, in the back of bars and other places one may never suspect. In California, a sex trafficking operation was even found in a bridal shop.

Promotion

Sex trafficking victims are pulled in through many avenues of promotion including:

  • Advertisements in newspapers and magazines
  • Advertisements on the internet
  • Illegal smuggling of people into the country
  • Abducting people from parties, homeless on the streets and so forth

Individuals are promoted to for jobs like modeling, domestic help, to name a few, and then get caught up in the trafficking rings, unable to escape. They are often drugged and confined to houses or apartments and heavily threatened if they try to escape.

Special Task Force

A special task force has been set up called the Interagency Task Force on Human Trafficking to help educate law enforcement and social service agencies on how they can help enforce the laws concerning trafficking and coordinate actions.
