Under penal law in the state of New York, certain sex crime convictions require mandatory registration as a sex offender. Anyone convicted for committing or for an attempt to commit such an offense, who is incarcerated, under parole, or probation for one or more of the registerable sex offenses on or after January 21, 1996 is subject to registration with the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Failure to register is a criminal offense.

Sex crimes which require sex offender registration include:

  • Luring a child
  • Sexual misconduct
  • Forcible touching
  • Sexual abuse
  • Rape
  • Sodomy
  • Aggravated sexual abuse
  • Sexual conduct against a child
