According to Florida Highway safety and Motor Vehicle Reports, in 2009, drivers who were 20-24 years in age had the highest rate of fatal automobile accidents and represented the highest number of accidents and fatal crashes that were alcohol related.

Local Accident Turns to DUI Manslaughter

This past June, a 22-year-old was driving with his girlfriend and a 17-year-old friend after swimming when he let his attention go off the road while arguing. He accelerated into a curve, lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a tree according to the Fort Myers Press reports. His 20-year-old girlfriend was killed instantly and the driver and other passenger were seriously injured. The driver was charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, DUI with serious bodily injury and DUI with property damage. He faces 20 years in prison if convicted. Police reports stated that the driver was also under the influence of marijuana when the crash occurred.
