Teen Suspect Found Asleep in Stolen Car

By Clawson & Clawson, LLP  Jul. 16, 2013 10:40a

A Colorado Springs teen, under 18 years old, was found asleep inside a car that had been reported as stolen recently. Police saw the stolen car parked on Mapleton Drive just after midnight one evening. Officers approached the vehicle and found the minor asleep inside. The teen was awoken but he refused to leave the locked car. Eventually, police were forced to break a window and drag the boy out of the vehicle. The officers were able to ascertain his name and then found out he was wanted on a felony burglary warrant. The teen was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Spring Creek Juvenile Detention Center. Reports do not indicate whether or not his parents have been contacted or if he will be released into their care. Has your underage child been arrested for a crime? How Juvenile Crime Charges are Handled

Criminal accusations against individuals under 18 years of age are usually handled much differently from adult criminal cases. Once a minor has been arrested, he or she may be either released back into their parents' custody or held at a juvenile detention facility. Whether or not the minor is released depends on the circumstances of the alleged offense and the opinion of the authorities or judge involved. An investigation into the case is conducted by the District Attorney's Office at which point official charges may be brought against the individual. The case is brought before a judge in a preliminary hearing if charges are filed. There are several different things that can happen at this point in the case. Prosecution can present evidence against the minor and in some cases it may be argued that the alleged crime was severe enough to warrant the defendant being tried as an adult.
