Suspected Watch Thief Arrested 3 Days Later

By Law Offices of Barney B. Gibbs October 23, 2013

A Newport Beach man was recently taken into custody on suspicion of robbery in an incident that had occurred several days before. Westminster Police had been trying to find a suspect that had stolen a high-end watch from a jewelry store. Officers responded to a call of shots fired at the location at about 4:00 p.m. A man had grabbed a watch worth nearly $10,000 and ran from the store. The owner chased the man into the parking lot and the two got into a physical confrontation. The suspect was able to get away and drove off in a dark-colored vehicle. The store owner fired several shots at the man but hadn't hit him. Three days later, an employee at a Tustin store called police after a man came in with a watch that matched the description of the one that had been stolen. The employee had read about the theft and worked to keep the man at the location until police could arrive. The suspected thief was trying to sell the $9,400 watch. Tustin and Westminster authorities arrived and arrested the man on suspicion of felony robbery. The watch he was trying to sell was reported to be the same one that had been stolen from the jewelry store in Westminster. The suspect was booked into Orange County Jail. About Robbery Charges

Robbery is considered a violent theft offense similar to carjacking as it involves, by definition, the use of threats or actual physical violence in order to steal another's property. There are five different robbery charges—first degree robbery, second degree robbery, armed robbery and robbery with the discharge of a firearm—all of them are felony-level offenses. A conviction could result in nine years in prison.
