Driving on a suspended license in the state of Virginia can result in harsh penalties if you are convicted. Driving on a suspended license is a Class 1 misdemeanor offense, which is punishable by up to 12 months in jail, up to $2,500 in fines and a license suspension for the same amount of time as the present period or up to 90 days for a first and second offense. On a third offense, you are required to go to jail for a mandatory minimum of 10 days. If you have been charged with driving on a suspended license, contact a Richmond DUI attorney for help today.

Reasons for License Suspension

The unfortunate thing about license suspension is you can be driving on a suspended license without having knowledge of the fact that your license was suspended. If you are caught driving on a suspended license, you face criminal and administrative penalties regardless if you were aware of it or not. Reasons that your driving privileges could be suspended include: 90 days delinquency of child support or $5,000 in arrearages, accumulated DMV points, failure to pay court ordered fines within 15 days of a criminal or traffic conviction, driving recklessly, DUI/DWI, drug possession, and failure to complete a mandatory driver improvement clinic within a specified time.
