Statistics Show Crime Decreasing In Virginia

By Vaughan C. Jones  Oct. 11, 2011 11:32a

According to Virginia state police, statistics show that violent crime including robbery, aggravated assault, forcible rape and murder are declining. There was a 5% decrease last year in 2010 as compared to the previous year according to the annual Crime in Virginia report which tallies both state and local figures. Per FBI reports, on a national level, violent crime has decreased by 5.5 %, a figure which was calculated from over 13,000 law enforcement agencies.

Criminologist Gives Reasons for Declines

According to criminologist James Alan Fox from Northeastern University, the decline signifies success from aggressive law enforcement actions and correction programs as well as comprehensive crime prevention efforts. He mentioned that budget cuts for programs that are working could jeopardize and reverse this statistical decline. Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Director Marla Decker made a statement that the decrease in violent crime reflects law enforcement's hard work in the community and their partners in the criminal justice system. Crimes like burglary, larceny, and car theft decreased by 3% last year in Virginia which paralleled the nation's national average according to FBI reports.
